Violent weekend leaves 3 dead, 11 injured in city
A weekend of violence left three families mourning their
dead, and 11 people wounded.
Markell Crawford, 16, was stabbed following an argument shortly
after 7 p.m. Friday on Baynton Street near Germantown Avenue,
Germantown, police said. He was pronounced dead at Albert
Einstein Medical Center about 7:15 p.m.
An 18-year-old man was taken into custody, cops said, and
charges were pending.
At 10:30 p.m. Friday, cops said, Dontae Phillips, 21, was
shot in the head inside his house on McMahon Street near Woodlawn
Avenue, Germantown.
Investigators said another man was wounded in the same incident,
but they did not give details.
Yesterday, a 25-year-old man was shot about 10:30 a.m. on
Alcott Street near Frontenac in the Northeast. He was shot
in the chest, legs and stomach, police said, and was pronounced
dead at Einstein.
Police had no suspects or motive in the slaying, which brought
the homicide total for the year to nine.
Three young men were shot about 1 p.m. Saturday while playing
basketball on a playground on Woolston Street near Walnut
Lane, Germantown.
A man, 19, was shot in the back and shoulder, a 20-year-old
was shot in the leg, and a 23-year-old was shot in the hand.
The 19-year-old was in critical condition at Einstein, the
others in stable condition.
Also shot over the weekend, police said:
A 36-year-old man, in the face at 16th and Bristol streets
in Germantown, in serious condition at Temple University Hospital;
a 19-year-old man, twice in the back shortly after 7:30 p.m.
Saturday on 54th Street near Woodland Avenue in Southwest
Philadelphia, fighting for his life at the Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania; a man, 32, in the head less than
four hours later on 25th Street near Clearfield, Kensington,
in stable condition at Temple; a man, 27, in the buttocks
and leg on Front Street near Allegheny Avenue shortly before
3 a.m. yesterday, in stable condition at Temple; a man, 23,
on 58th Street near Chester Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia,
in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of
Pennsylvania; a youth, 17, in stable condition at Temple University
Hospital and a man, 24, in stable condition at Frankford Hospital-Torresdale
after an incident about 2 p.m. yesterday on Luzerne Street
near M in Juniata Park; a man, 22, in both legs on 18th Street
near Pulaski Avenue, Nicetown, shortly before 4:30 p.m. yesterday,
in stable condition at Temple.
